I found the attached note when I was cleaning out some of my mom’s stuff. I am guessing it’s from 1967 when my brother Steve was 11. I am sure he wrote hundreds of similar notes through the years. One memory I have is Mr. Picard always called me Danny. Made me feel special.

Besides being a fierce advocate for his clients John was a real character. I enjoyed watching his intense defense of those who needed help.
The Bar has lost a great lawyer and many of us has lost a friend.

Dear Robin and the rest of the family. I am heartbroken to hear of John's passing. I have such fond memories of the time spent with John, and upon the loss of my father, I really looked at him as my "second dad". He and Robin welcomed myself as a dear friend, but more importantly, as part of that wonderful family. I will forever be greatful! I remember travelling to Toronto for a long weekend with you both and John not knowing who Abba was, but by the end of Mama Mia, he was dancing in the aisle! - the memories go on and on. All those Christmas parties at the Saginaw Club and your beautiful home, times at Spencers, many many conversations and stories of all the incredible trips, time spent at your pool, and most of all....just time together. I felt so undereducated when I was around John as he was so well read and informed, but learned alot just be being around him. I loved him like a father and love you all, especially you Robin. I will pray for you Robin and your entire family. Such a wonderful, full life John had. Rest in Peace, I love you John.

Pete, Chris, Michelle, and Guy,
I remember so many great memories of your dad. Always his wise advise to us on life decisions.
(Whether we needed it or not.) Your dad was one of those individuals who helped me out more
then once especially when I needed it. He always looked out for us and had our backs. I will always
remember his patience helping out my mom when she needed his advise. Most of all, I will always
remember enjoying those great times with your family at Picard's Glen Lake Cottage.
Pete and family,
Although I can not be in Saginaw with you for your dads service,
my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
Sincerely,
(Peter D.) Pete DePrekel

I was very sad to hear of the passing of JP. I have known John since the mid-1980s when he was in private practice and I was at the FOC and later the Referee office. He was a long time friend of my deceased father since high school. John was a fine lawyer who defended his clients with passion. Sometimes his clients would feel that passion if they did not follow his instructions. We had a tradition of eating lunch together at least once each month for many years. We usually ate at Beef O Brady’s. I was never allowed to pay as he said since I worked for the government I could not afford lunch out. He was upset when I ordered bottled water with my lunch as tap water was free. I always ordered bottled water just to upset him. He had a love for Saginaw High just like my father. He told me of the Thanksgiving game (which was played annually back in the day on Thanksgiving weekend) with Arthur Hill and how they won in the waning minutes of the game thanks to his quarterback play. I will miss John and his sense of humor which was often directed at me. They threw away the mold when they made him. My sympathy to the family especially Chris whom I have also known for many years.

My mother, Gloria, graduated with John and always had the highest regard for him. She was so proud just to be in the same high school class...the class of State Champions!...I have great respect for John, since meeting him in the Court House in the seventies...a tough competitor and great lawyer. My condolences...

My very first exposure to organized sports...organized anything really...started at age eight with my first practice with the Picells. After much crying from the "experience" and parents cajoling...I along with Dave Maine returned the next day and kept coming back for the next three years. It was a tremendous growth experience about discipline, organization, goals...everything necessary as a foundation for success in life. We were all so proud to wear the blue sweatshirt and gold helmet. Ours was the very last Picells/Vikings team he coached along with Mr. Ryan...we finished that year undefeated and unscored upon...somewhat unheard of in flag football, but a fitting end to such a storied program that so many passed through. I wasn't able to get back to Saginaw for the reunion but was able to talk to coach after and reminisce about the team and what he meant to so many of us.
Pete, Chris, Michelle, Guy you're in my prayers...Coach was legendary for many of us. May he Rest in Peace.
