The picture we posted is a memory of Vera Jean on our cottage front porch one Saturday when Jean & Mike joined us for dinner. Please know that we are thinking of all of you as we all shed tears for the loss of Jean's earthly body. But know "Aunt Jean's" spirit will certainly live on at Valentine Lake in the call of the loons, the evening whippoorwill, the pine forests, sunsets reflecting in the water, our family gatherings and more. And, what a lovely spirit Aunt Jean embodied with her serene, warm, smile and lovely, tranquil disposition. She has been a delightful part of my summer time life as long as my memory stretches back (as well as that of my children) and Mike has similar fond memories of her going back at least 40 years. Even my grandchildren remember her as the sweet person who invited them to play in the playhouse and who would sit and watch them play on the beach in her last few years at Valentine. We are grateful to have had such a lovely person in our family and in our lives.
Judith Viorst, the wonderful woman who wrote "Alexander's Terrible, Horrible No Good day," also wrote a book called Necessary Losses.
Mike read a short passage from that book at my father's memorial, and I would like to post it here in the hopes it brings some comfort knowing that the pain of losing is equal to the love you had when Jean was in our lives.
"I've learned that in the course of our life, we leave and are left and let go of much that we love. Losing is the price we pay for living. It is also the source of much of our growth. There is plenty we have to give up in order to grow. We cannot deeply love anything without becoming vulnerable to loss. And, we cannot become separate people, responsible people, connected people, reflective people without some losing and leaving and letting go."
Again, we are thinking of all of you. Mike & Carol
