My early memories of Uncle Tom included road trips to Saginaw or family coming out to Colorado in the summer. I miss the days of posting up at Grandma and Grandpas. The constant flow of people into the house, chicken fights in the pool, Uncle Art's impromptu softball games, smashing pennies on the train tracks, Uncle Tom on the grill and being surrounded by such a loving family. Side bar - who was in uncle Toms sweet van in Colorado when Tommy stepped on the wasp's nest along Boulder Creek? We had to race the swarm back to uncle Toms van just in time to slam the doors, peel out and watch the windows go dark as they slowly were cloaked in angry wasps. Regardless of who did the traveling, it was always a great family gathering with lots of laughs and plenty of good old fashioned Italian drama. Most important, an effort was made every year to get the family together. I will always be thankful for those days.
When I was little Uncle Tom always felt a little dangerous (in a cool way) to me. His motorcycles, wall to wall carpeted van, his gravelly voice, tattoos, my cousins with wild hair playing in rock and roll bands and his Yosemite Sam "back off" mud guards. It was a little like having an Uncle who was half Harley and half angry golfer. By the way, nothing was more terrifying (and funny) than golfing with both uncle Tom and Grandpa Barr. I learned a ton of new cuss words on those days. As time marched on, I found a much different connection with my Uncle. Once you got past his gravelly voice and rough and tumble demeanor, you'd find somebody to who would do anything for anyone and expect nothing in return. In recent years we did not see as much of each other but still found ways to catch up. Often, we'd call Uncle Tom from my Dad's house after Sunday dinner and laugh about what the "Sports Model" was up to in Michigan. He loved to tell us about his boys, hunting, fishing and how he was driving Diana crazy. Most importantly, no matter what we discussed, he always finished with "I love you". Uncle Tom - I love you. You will be dearly missed.

If you ever thought you could get away with giving Uncle Tom a one-armed, limp, half-hug, you were mistaken. Uncle Tom HUGGED you, with BOTH arms, one hundred percent. Uncle Tom was in Colorado for my mom and dad's 50th wedding anniversary. My best friend who I've know since high school was at the party and I took her to meet Uncle Tom. My friend put out her hand and said "Oh, Uncle Tom! I remember you!" Uncle Tom said, "Well then I remember you too, sweetheart!," grabbed her extended hand, and pulled her in for a one hundred percent hug. RIP Uncle Tom. You and your hugs will be missed. Nikki

Tom I remember when you and the others in the family came over to our house and we made Italian sausage. It was somewhere in the 75 pound range and we would taste the sausage and have the Napolitano bread. It was a fun time. You will be missed cuz. Let the perpetual light shine upon you and rest in peace.
