Obituary of Larry R. Niederstadt

Niederstadt, Larry R. "Coach" Rapid City, Michigan formerly of St. Charles Our beloved, brother, friend, and coach passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was 73 years old. Larry Robert Niederstadt was born on December 23, 1945 in Saginaw to the late Edward R. and Elda Mae (Lincoln) Niederstadt. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1964. Larry continued his education at Delta College and then graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelors in Business and Industrial Arts. He started his teaching career at Peace Lutheran School and then continued teaching at Beaverton and Deckerville. Larry then moved to St. Charles and taught at St. Charles High School where he coached basketball, mentored students and devoted his time to the athletes and students for over thirty years. His teaching career covered vocational educational director for 29 years and athletic director for 13 years during that time. During his coaching career, Larry had a total of 376 Varsity boys basketball victories at St. Charles, Beaverton and Deckerville. He was named BCAM Basketball Coach of the Year in 1994, and his teams were conference champs in 1978, 1980, 2004, and 2009. In 2017, he was inducted into the St. Charles High School Sports Hall of Fame. As athletic director, he was key in reorganization the Tri-Valley Conference. During Larry's retirement he moved to his cottage on beautiful Torch Lake where he spent the last 14 years. While in retirement he volunteered as the assistant basketball coach at Elk Rapids High School and served four terms as the township supervisor for Clearwater Township in northern Michigan. Larry's motto, D.B.O.W. (Don't Be Out Worked) will forever be remembered by those who he has influenced. Throughout his life, Larry had many loved German Shepherds including: Baron, Kaiser, Kahn, Gretchen and Gypsi. Larry is survived by his siblings: Lynn Niederstadt, Diane Niederstadt and Brian Niederstadt; and many friends and students. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Elda; his infant sister, Susan K. Niederstadt. SERVICE: A memorial service for Larry will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State). Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
