Obituary of David M. Levinsohn

Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on Monday, November 13, 2017 at his home, with his family by his side. He was 96 years old. David Morton Levinsohn was born on March 14, 1921 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Louis and Ella (Hirschfield) Levinsohn.
He was educated at Saginaw High School and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1939 within the top 10 percent of his class. He then moved to California and enrolled at UCLA and the ROTC. Dr. Levinsohn then transferred to Northern Illinois College of Optometry, graduating in 1943 with a 4.0 grade point average. He then enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps serving from October 2, 1943 to March 10, 1946 during World War II. He trained in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He served in Augusta, Georgia, New Haven, Connecticut, Boston, Massachusetts and finally at Patterson Field in Dayton, Ohio at an eye clinic. Following his return, Dr. Levinsohn opened his own business, practicing optometry for 48 years. He married the love of his life, Sally E. Saul on April 18, 1948 in Saginaw, Michigan; she survives him.
Dr. Levinsohn served on the Saginaw City Council, Saginaw County Board of Supervisors, Human Relations Committee and the Red Cross Board. He was a life member of the American Optometric Association, Past President of the Saginaw Civitan Club and the United Service Clubs. He was also a member of the Saginaw Valley Optometric Society, South Saginaw Businessmen's Association, Temple B'Nai Israel, B'Nai Brith Lodge and a life member of the YMCA.
Dr. Levinsohn and his family enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, the Middle East, South America, Central America and to many of the U.S. National Parks. He also had a special love for the outdoors, nature and truly enjoyed hiking. Dr. Levinsohn was an avid reader and he kept up with the latest news and current events.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 69 years, Sally E. Levinsohn of Saginaw Township; one son and three daughters: Elliot (Marla) Levinsohn of Williamston, Elysa (Jay Beck) Levinsohn of Ann Arbor, Dr. Marcia (Glenn) Matsuura of Blackfoot, ID and Amy (Russell Krok) Levinsohn of Baywood Park, CA; 10 grandchildren: Reuben (Rachel) Levinsohn, Ari (Shoni) Levinsohn, Rivka (Chris) Fountain, Joshua Levinsohn, Samuel Beck, Rachel Beck, Jamie Matsuura (Andy Jansen), Ben Matsuura, Michael Matsuura and Julia Krok; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Grant.
FUNERAL: A Funeral Service will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State). Rabbi Jennifer Lader will officiate. Burial will follow at the Hebrew Cemetery with Military Honors provided under the auspices of the United State Air Force and VFW Post #1859.
VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
