Obituary of John Raymond Tinney

Tinney, John R. of Saginaw Township Beloved husband, father, and grandfather went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at HealthSource of Saginaw. He was 86 years old. John Raymond Tinney was born on October 6, 1930 in Saginaw to the late Paul Raymond and Clara Edna (Rice) Tinney. John was a proud 1948 graduate of Saginaw High School, taking third place in the state individually for track and field. He contributed to Saginaw High taking 1st place that year. He proudly served his country by enlisting into the United States Marine Corps from January 1951 to January 1954. He met the love of his life, Sally Lou LaBrake, while ice skating at Hoyt Park. They were united in marriage on March 24, 1951 in Saginaw; she survives him. John was employed by Consumers Energy as a gas serviceman; retiring in 1993 after 39 ½ years of dedicated service. He was a faithful member of Second Presbyterian and a member of the Marine Corps League. He was an avid outdoors man, enjoying both fishing and hunting. John had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved and cherished his wife, children and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Above all, he will forever be remembered for his kind gentle spirit and for his passion to help other people. Surviving are his beloved wife of 66 years, Sally L. Tinney of Saginaw Township; one son and three daughters: John (Nancy) Tinney of Saginaw Township, Jayne Jones of Haslett, Sue (Bob) Trahan of Freeland and Jennifer (Ben) Haddox of Yorkville, IL; eight grandchildren: Allison and Alex Jones, Jaclyn, Robert and Ryan Trahan, Zachary and Lukas Haddox, and Alexander Messer; three sisters-in-law: Beverly Tinney, Joyce Thormeier and Nancy (Dave) LaBeau; two brothers-in-law: Bill (Lorraine) LaBrake and Sidney (Carol) LaBrake. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and special friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters: Dorothy (Frank) Frost, Wilma Patzwaldt, Edward Tinney and William (Shirley) Patzwaldt; and a brother-in-law, Grant Thormeier. FUNERAL: A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 2665 Midland Rd. Rev. James Neumann will officiate. Military Honors and burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Gardens under the auspices of the United States Marine Corps and the American Legion Post #439. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Second Presbyterian Capital Improvement Fund, Dementia Society of America or HealthSource of Saginaw.
