Obituary of Jennings Anthony Gavit

Gavit, Jennings Anthony "Gus" Saginaw, Michigan Beloved father, grandfather and brother passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 26, 2015. He was 84 years old. Jennings Anthony "Gus" Gavit was born on February 10, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Jennings and Grace (Guest) Gavit. He married his true love, Delores B. Keroson on April 18, 1959; she preceded him in death on January 16, 2011. Together they celebrated 51 wonderful years of marriage. He was a proud graduate of the University of Detroit receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Following graduation, Gus proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955 -1957, serving on Midway Island and in the Philippines. Upon his return, Gus and his brother, Al, established A & J Sheet Metal, which they owned and operated for many years. He also continued to work in the sheet metal business throughout his life, retiring as a foreman. Gus was an active and faithful member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church where he served as a Hospitality Minister. He loved bird watching, following sports and taking walks with his wife, Delores. He also enjoyed gardening, traveling and most recently cooking. Gus was a true handyman and enjoyed working on and fixing things in his spare time. Above all, Gus loved and cherished his wife, five sons, his beloved grandchildren, and the unforgettable memories they shared together as a family. Surviving are five sons and their spouses: Greg and Kathy Gavit of Freeland, Patrick Gavit and Marie Ebiner Gavit of Glendora, California, Dennis and Victoria Gavit of Alpena, Fr. Steven Gavit of Saginaw, and Terry and Lisa Gavit of Saginaw; Six grandchildren: Jeffrey, Juline, Lisa, Hannah, Mark and Sandra; two brothers: Albert and Madeline Gavit and Fr. James Gavit. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Mary Sonntag, Anna Mae Hamann, and Rita Grohman. FUNERAL: Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 30, 2015 at St. John Paul II Catholic Church, St. Josaphat site, 469 Shattuck Road. Gus' son, Rev. Fr. Steven Gavit and his brother, Rev. Fr. James Gavit will officiate. Rite of Committal and Military Honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post #439 and the United States Navy will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Gus will lie in state at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. John Paul II Catholic Church.
