Obituary of Michael John Wisniewski

WISNIEWSKI, Michael J. (Cherry) of Trenary, Michigan, formerly of Saginaw, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Grand Rapids Home for Veteran's. He was 71 years old. Michael John (Cherry) Wisniewski was born on November 24, 1942, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Frank and Martha (Schultz) Cherry. Michael was a 1960 graduate of St. Andrew High School and in 1965 he graduated with an Associate's Degree from Delta College. He proudly enlisted to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from September 20, 1966, until his honorable discharge on July 26, 1968. Following his return from the Army, Michael attended Central Michigan University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work in 1977. He worked for the Department of Social Services in Bay City as a social worker representing children and young adults. Michael enjoyed traveling, especially with his dog and was proud to have traveled 48 states twice. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved nature, he especially enjoyed fishing. Above all, he loved and cherished his grandchildren. Michael was a former member of St. John Paul II Catholic Church (St. Josaphat), Polish American Society of Northern Michigan, Knights of Columbus Council #4232, VFW Post # 1859, and American Legion Northern Michigan. Surviving are one son and one daughter: Patrick (Cindy) Wisniewski of Saginaw, Lisa (Wisniewski) Bosworth of Roosevelt Park; grandchildren: Allison (Richard) Hamilton, Mindy (Jeff) Snyder, Katrina Herder, Kristina Herder and Rachel Bosworth; two great grandchildren: Chase and Julia Hamilton; one brother-in-law, Loton Eastman; one sister-in-law, Shirley Wisniewski; and his two beloved dogs: Sassy and Breezy; a special friend, Mary; and special friend, George from Grand Marais. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and additional friends. The family would also like to acknowledge Michaels friends at the Gwinn-Sawyer Veterinary Clinic. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Tendercare in Munising, Marquette General Hospital and the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, as well as Butterworth/Spectrum Hospital for all the love and care they provided. He is preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Nancy (Mike) Macdonald, Joanie Eastman, Roy (Maureen) Cherry, Dave Wisniewski, and Mary Kay (Bob) Quinn. FUNERAL: A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at St. John Paul II Catholic Church (St. Josaphat site) 469 Shattuck Rd. Saginaw, Michigan. Rev. Fr. James W. Bessert will officiate. Burial and Military Honors will take place on Monday, July 28, 2014, at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) Saginaw, Michigan, on Friday, July 25, 2014, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Michael will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
