Obituary of Malcolm C. Hamather
Hamather, Malcolm C. “Mac”
Saginaw, Michigan
Our beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Edgewood Assisted Living. He was 99 years old. Malcolm Charles Hamather was born on January 28, 1925 in Saginaw to the late Hazen R. and Clyta M. (Kerr) Hamather. Mac graduated from Saginaw High School in 1942. He enlisted with the United States Navy and proudly served his country during WWII. His ship engaged in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. After the war ended, Mac continued to serve with the Navy Reserves. He met the love of his life, Natalie J. Strachan, through friends and they were married on February 10, 1947. During the Korean War, Mac returned to active duty. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Saginaw and began his life long career working in the lumber, window and door wholesale industry. His career in Saginaw included Fisher Lumber Company and Morgan Sash and Door as an Anderson Window Wholesaler. While working and raising his children, David, Mary and Peter, he built the family home on Mackinaw Court. Mac was a family man. He enjoyed taking his family on camping trips to Michigan State Parks as well as day trips to Michigan landmarks. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; especially enjoying deer camp at the family property in Mikado, and pheasant hunting on Crow Island. Mac resided in Saginaw until 1980 when he purchased Rocky Mountain Millwork in Denver, Colorado. He owned and operated that business until his retirement and relocation to Phoenix, Arizona, where he enjoyed the hot and sunny weather. Mac was a loving and devoted husband to Natalie and they made wonderful memories together, traveling and entertaining family and friends out west. They returned to Saginaw in 2000 to be closer to family. Natalie preceded Mac in death on December 1, 2007. Mac’s love of sports brought him years of excitement and agony, as he was a season ticket holder for the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos. Pure joy and delight filled his heart watching his grandsons play soccer and being designated as the Assistant Coach. Mac always watched over the neighborhood on Cranbrook; walking, waving at passersby, feeding the birds, keeping up with the neighbors and tinkering in the yard and garage with Cat by his side. His special companion, Inez Morrison, kept Mac busy in his later years: playing cards and often going out for a drive or having dinner together.
Mac was a loving a devoted father to his children: Mary (Bob) LeFevre of Saginaw, MI; David (Denise) Hamather of Spring Lake, MI and Peter (Karen) Hamather of Moore, OK; his grandchildren: Brian (Caitlin) LeFevre, Jon (Amy) LeFevre and Katriese Bolen; great-grandsons, Cole, Caleb, Alan, Malcolm and Emmett; sister, Helen Kanaly; sister-in-law, Mary Hamather; his dear cat, Cat; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and granddaughter, Aimee Hamather Foy; brother, Hazen James “Jimmy” Hamather; brother-in-law, James Kanaly; and his special companion, Inez Morrison.
