Obituary of John P. Vertacnik

John Peter Vertacnik, age 87, passed away Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. Francis Home in Saginaw. He was born September 8, 1936 in Saginaw, son of the late John Vincent and Genevieve (LaPointe) Vertacnik. John attended school in Saginaw and graduated from St. Andrew High School in 1954. Following his graduation, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving for three years. Upon fulfilling his obligation to the Marines, John went on to serve his country once more in the Air Force. During this time he was united in marriage to Mary Mae Wintersteen on October 5, 1963 in Dayton, Ohio. She preceded him in death on December 11, 2021. After his discharge from the military, John and his family moved back to Michigan, settling once again in Saginaw. He was employed for many years with McClelland Duff Millwork Inc. before moving on and retiring from Case Systems. John was a long-time member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, St. Stephen Parish. He also enjoyed spending his time wood carving and fishing.

John is survived by his son, Peter (Kim) Vertacnik; sister, Ann (John) Cowie; niece, Claire Cowie; and nephew, Stephen Cowie. In addition to his parents and wife Mary, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Vertacnik.

FUNERAL: The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2023 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, St. Stephen Site, 1310 Malzahn Street, Saginaw, Michigan. Father Richard John will officiate with burial to follow in St. Andrew Cemetery.

VISITATION: Family and friends may gather at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Liturgy.
