Obituary of Shirley M. Baumer

Shirley M. Baumer of Zilwaukee, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Covenant HealthCare – Cooper. She was 98 years old. Shirley Mae Summerfield was born on August 8, 1924 in Saginaw to the late Wilford and Ethel Victoria (Duby) Summerfield. During World War II, while her sweetheart was serving with the Navy, Shirley worked for Eaton Manufacturing. When the love of her life and lifelong soul mate returned from the war she married, Robert W. Baumer on June 1, 1946; together they celebrated 68 wonderful years of marriage before his passing on June 17, 2014. Shirley was a faithful charter member of St. Helen Catholic Church. She loved to create oil paintings, and the art of embroidery, creating many quilt squares for the Catholic Daughters of America, Court #2593 in North Carolina. She also knit clothing, 500 pairs of mittens and chemo hats, and sewing many family heirlooms including her daughter’s wedding dress and suits for her boys. When Shirley wasn’t using her talents to create, she was found with a fishing pole in her hand. She also enjoyed many trips to the casino with family and friends.

Shirley’s compassion and giving spirit will be deeply missed by those who survive her: two sons and two daughters: Allen (Dawn) Baumer of Pinconning, Gail Baumer, Veronica “Ronnie” Prill, Mark (Sheila) Baumer all of Saginaw; seven grandchildren: April (Jon) Brandel, Eric (Carla) Baumer, Craig Baumer, Stephanie (Ryan) Eberhart, Chad (Kim) Kostrzewa, Courtney (Eric) Bush, and Lesley Baumer; 12 great grandchildren: Jacob and Caleb Brandel, Ethan, Ryan and Hailey Baumer, Jayden, Bellasue and Bentley Baumer, Justin and Mason Eberhart,  Katelynn and Eliana Kostrzewa, and Addison and Anderson Bush; two great great-grandchildren: Kaysen and Aria; a sister-in-law, Shirley Davenport. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert W. Baumer; son-in-law, Rick Prill; sisters, Rosebud Curbey and Jacklyn Curbey

FUNERAL: Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 17, 2023 at Christ the Good Shepherd - St. Helen Catholic Church, 2445 N. Charles Street. Rev. Fr. William J. Rutkowski will officiate. Private entombment will take place at St. Andrew Mausoleum.

VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m.
