Obituary of Irene Giroux
Giroux, Irene
Saginaw, Michigan
Irene Giroux was born Evangeline Irene Romain in Caro, Michigan on October 28, 1918 and lived to be 104 years of age. She passed away at her home in her own bed on February 14, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Irene led a long life growing up in Caro, Michigan and raising four children. She married Leo Giroux in 1944. She has lived through and survived two world wars, two pandemics, and the great depression. During World War II she was employed in the Ford plant in Detroit making armaments of war for the United States. She worked on the production line, building machine guns and other weapons of war earning her the title of our own Rosie the Riveter.
Irene enjoyed making many crafts for her children and friends, making bird houses, purses, and other useful items. She liked gardening, knitting, and making clothes for her children when they were in school. Irene dabbled in mosaics and loved redoing older pieces of furniture, giving them new life. She loved exercising and walked a lot. In her older years, Irene took care of the elderly. Because she did not drive, she walked from home to jobs for most of her life, thus helping her to live a long life. Previous jobs included the A&W restaurant in Saginaw where she worked for many years. She enjoyed taking vacations with her children as they traveled around the country and she loved camping with them in the many state parks of Michigan.
Irene’s husband Leo, two sisters, and two brothers, Virginia Salgat, Marie Beach, Edward Romain, and Vince Romain preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sister, Maxine Baxter. Irene was a the mother of four children, Edward (Kathi) Giroux of Florida, Joyce (John) Lamblin of Saginaw, MI, Jean (Patrick) DiSarno of Flushing, MI, and Patrick Giroux of Saginaw, MI. She has nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
She will be missed by her family and friends, she was the light of our family and as the light has been extinguished, her memory will live on forever.
