Obituary of Margaret "Meg" Wegs
Wegs, Margaret Mary
Saginaw, Michigan
Margaret (Meg) Wegs connected God, science and herself when she excavated a fossil when she was nine, marveling at history and the Creator of all life. Born in Estherville, Iowa, May 8, 1931 to Gerald (Jerry) and Mary Wegs, she was raised in a world of baseball, filling stations, and great geology, along with her brother Jim, and her sister Kathryn.
Meg attended Briar Cliff College, ran by the Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, Iowa. She grew to admire them and entered their community in August 1951. Teaching became her primary focus, working towards her master’s degree in science education at Kansas State University. Wearing a habit and a veil her first year, made rock and fossil hunting a challenge!
She taught in many schools, including several years on the Lakota Rosebud Indian Reservation, teaching children and helping special needs adults. Meg was profoundly affected by the customs and wisdom she found there.
Always a seeker, she began reading about the Baha’i Faith, and noticed the similarities of these readings to passages in the Bible. She was also inspired by a book titled Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen, and learned of her own visions which illustrated similar principals to the Bible as well. This began Meg’s creating her own versions of these illustrations, and creating many more.
Committing herself to the Baha’i Faith meant leaving the convent behind, but her need to help and be of service continued, as did her studies, including world travel to the Baha’i holy places. This trip occurred when a Baha’i friend needed someone to accompany her.
The pursuit of faith and wisdom, the love and service to people, the care of the earth and the love of art… these have all influenced the artwork in the sampling of the collected works of Meg Wegs. Many of her pieces have been donated to charity, and given freely to many.
