Spalding, Mary Jane Stuart

Saginaw, Michigan

Passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Covenant Medical Center after 101 fabulous years.  Mary Jane was born in Saginaw, Michigan on August 23, 1919, the daughter of Norman and Erma (Landskroener) Stuart.  She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.  She graduated from Michigan State University in 1941 with a degree in Library Science and worked at Hoyt Library for much of her career.  Mary Jane married Charles Spalding, whom she met at Michigan State University, at St. John’s Church on June 6, 1942.  She was a member of Questers and loved reading, music, travel and spending summers at Gull Lake, Michigan.  Mary Jane was always one to brighten any event with uplifting stories and a wonderful sense of humor.  Her sentiments were; It’s not the years in your life, it’s the life in your years, and Keep a song in your heart.  She is survived by her son David F. (Betsy) Spalding, Wilmette, IL; and her daughter Nancy (John) Greko, Hamburg, MI.  She enjoyed her six grandchildren, Jeffrey (Renee) Spalding, Chicago, IL; Joshua (Megan) Greko, Saginaw, MI; Brian (Raphaella) Spalding, Denver, CO; Melissa (Bill) Gutzwiller, Freeland, MI; Emily (Niall) Byers, Durango, CO; and Jonathan (Emma) Greko, Spokane, WA, and her thirteen great-grandchildren, Isabella, Gillian, Adrianna, Alexis, William, Grace, Henry, Jesse, Forrest, Benjamin, Luke, Charlotte and Arabella.

The graveside service took place on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, and was officiated by Father Curt Norman.  Mary Jane was surrounded by her family members and a bag piper who played Amazing Grace.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the charity of their choice.
