I hired Dave when I was the head football coach at Saginaw High in the 60's. He became the scouting team, defense and offense. He was able motivate the players to the level that they performed like varsity players from our opposing team that we be facing Friday night. He was a fantastic coach and a great person. He'll be missed by all his players, coaches and friends. Oarie Lemanski

My deepest condolences to Deb and family. I met Dave and Deb at Health Source and witnessed the love they shared. We found we had memories in common, i.e. St. Andrew's H.S., Levi's. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Deb. You were a special caregiver. May the angels welcome Dave to Paradise.

Debbie and Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Dave's passing. My condolences to you and the family. Dave was a very special man who was one of a kind. He touched so many lives in such a positive way and truly loved kids. He had that infectious smile and laugh that helped him make friends with everyone. He would drop everything in a moment's notice to help anyone who needed assistance. Dave was immensely loyal to his students, his players and co-workers and it was a joy and privilege to work with him. I loved him like a brother. We are all better people for having had him in our lives.

Uncle Dave made me proud to be a Coffey. I always admired his courage and fearlessness. He never seemed impressed or intimidated by anyone who came from an affluent background. He had a great sense of humor. I have a vivid memory of hearing him yell from the stands at a CMU football game down to the field "dont hurt anyone Coffey!" . He gave me a job at Levi's and helped me find work after I graduated. I am grateful to have had him as an uncle. I know he is now reunited with Grandma and Grandpa, uncle Jerry, aunt Jackie and my Dad Pat.

This memory may have already been shared by my sisters, but the time that sticks in my head about Uncle Dave was taking the pontoon boat out from Elk Rapids channel to Torch lake. It was scary because there were trees and logs sticking out of the water and we had to be very careful about the path we directed the boat through. All along though, Uncle Dave was a steady presence, reassuring us that we would get through it ok, and we did! I will miss Uncle Dave's easy confidence, his great smile and contagious laugh, and his wonderful hugs. He treated all his nieces and nephews like we were his own! Miss you Uncle Dave! To Deb, Ryan, Erin, Jake, Alyssa, and your families - many prayers to you and may Dave's spirit watch over you always! Kelly Coffey

Sending prayers and condolences to Debbie and the entire Coffey family. Dave played football with my dad at St. Andrews and, like many of the children of Dave's former teammates he hired me to bartend at Levi's. Dave was more than just a family friend or an employer, I am thankful to remember him a friend of mine as well. Rest in Peace.

I played baseball for coach Coffey at Douglas MacArthur H.S. in the late 70's. What a great coach he was! I believe our record the one year was something like 21-1. He was a hard nosed coach who got the very best out of his players. The entire team loved him!
I also remember what a great sense of humor he had! He always kept the team laughing on the bus rides. He also taught history and was a great teacher. He definitely made the world a better place!

My sincere sympathies to Dave's family. We were neighborhood buddies and Sacred Heart classmates. Dave was a great athlete and I still remember how we missed his talents when he left SH and went to St. Andrew's for his passion, football. Dave always had our back in the neighborhood whenever we were confronted by a bully.....they knew Dave and they left us alone.....lots of great stories and times we had. So sad.

Dave was a good friend and loyal buddy to Maggie and me. We were very close for the first half of his life--as a St. Andrews classmate, Saginaw High teacher, and then restaurateur. Maggie and I first met on a blind date arranged by Dave and this year we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed Dave and first wife Mary Ann's visits as we moved around the country- Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, Scranton, PA, and then Los Angeles with their two great kids-- Ryan and Erin. We remember Dave as living life boldly, always celebrating family and friends. Dave's approach to life reminds me of a quote from Danny Kaye--"Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can." We will always remember Dave as a world class paint thrower. Maggie and I are so thankful for his presence in our younger lives.

A leader, a coach a developer of young minds and direction! He made me a football player. I was either lost lazy or just going through the motions. Will never forget at practice how he grabbed a helmet and lined across from me and bull rushed me to mars. And then saying "that's how you block". It lite a fire! He set the standard, the approach, etc. Thank you for making me a player and the love of football to this day. I extend my lose to the coffey family. He was a great man in my life to me.

I played football and baseball for Coach Coffey In the late 70s. He was my favorite coach and everything said about him in the obituary was true. I loved his passion and he cared about his players. I also had him for history class and he was a great teacher. He would usually come in before a test and tell everyone he gave the test to two winos sitting in the park and they both got 87's so it was an easy exam!

Mr. C was both a teacher and my baseball coach while I attended Douglas MacArthur High School from 78-82. He was truly made our baseball practices lively with comedy only he could provide to us baseball players. I felt he did his best to keep us all in line to be the best group of ballplayers on the field. He was the first junior varsity coach to enter into a tournament in Mount Pleasant in 1981 for baseball. As a team from D.M.H.S. we won this tournament with his guidance and coaching. Today, whenever I see our team photograph, my junior varsity letter plus the baseball from the tournament we won I will think of him. He made me feel comfortable being a student and baseball player. It has been a great memory to remember him over the years. Thanks, Mr. C. From Daniel "Dan the Man" Engelke. Goodbye.

I knew the name Dave Coffey in High school when he coached. My classmates talked of him and how good of a coach he was and how they loved playing with him. I met Dave later in life in Freeland where my daughter and his daughter played softball. He was always there to watch and lend some advice. He loved his kids fiercely and wanted what was best. After those days Dave and I talked on the phone a few times or I would run in to him at Pats in Freeland. He was always so nice and we enjoyed catching up and talking about our children and what they were up to. I will not forget him and the passion he had for coaching and his family. RIP Dave.
