Passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, August 7, 2020 at Shields Comfort Care. He was 88 years old. Thomas Merle Evon was born December 5, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Mary (Merlone) Evon. He attended Saginaw High School graduating cum lade in 1949. Thomas was Junior Class president in 1948 and Senior Class president in 1949. He won letters for playing football and being a member of the state champion track team for 3 years. He met the love of his life, Irene Susalski, at a polka dance and married her on August 6, 1955 in Saginaw. Thomas and Irene celebrated 62 years together. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2018. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he helped to build runways in England for United States military bases. Thomas served his community as a police officer on the Saginaw Police Department for nine years. While on the police department, he was awarded a meritorious citation by Mayor Franke for his police work. He left the police force and went to work for General Motors at the Saginaw Grey Iron Plant and the Nodular Iron Foundry as a security and fire officer, retiring in 1990 after 26 years of service. Thomas was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Sons of Italy for many years. He was also a member of American Legion Post #439 where he served as Americanism Chairman for 6 years and was awarded the Clarence Taylor Award. Thomas was a life member of the Pulaski Club and was inducted into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Saginaw High School state championship track team.
He enjoyed working around his home and spending time in his yard. What Thomas really loved most was spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving are his children, Michael (Marla) Evon, Diane Gagen, Steven (Monica) Evon, Thomas Michael Evon, Paul S. Evon, Tim (Michelle) Evon, and Robert (Carmel) Evon; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Thomas was preceded in death by his brother, James Evon.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Road, Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Peter J. Gaspeny will officiate. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Army and American Legion Post # 439 immediately following Mass at the church. In keeping with Thomas's wishes, cremation has taken place.
VISITATION: Family and friends are welcome to visit at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. In keeping with mandated ordinances and for the safety of the community, face masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
