Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Herm, George C. Jr. Saginaw Twp., Michigan Passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at HealthSource Saginaw. He was 85 years old. George Charles Herm Jr. was born on August 29, 1934 in Saginaw to the late Marjorie Alice (Hatch) and George C. Herm Sr. He graduated from Saginaw High School in 1953, where he excelled in sports, starring in track and field. On September 1, 1956 George married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Stavely. To this union two children, Trevor and Valerie were born. George graduated with honors from Bay City Junior College then furthered his education at the University of Michigan receiving his Mechanical Engineering degree in 1959. He began his career with General Motors Saginaw Steering Gear that same year. In 1964, George was awarded a Master's Degree in mathematics on a General Motors fellowship and in 1966 received a Master's Degree in Engineering. Both post baccalaureate degrees were from the University of Michigan. Go Blue! In 1985, Sharon passed away from a lengthy battle with Scleroderma, and in 2002 Valerie lost her battle with breast cancer. On May 3, 1997 George married his long time love, Barbara Mann. They had 22 years together spending much of their time in Florida where as ball room dancers they received many gold medals in the senior Olympics. George will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara; his son, Trevor (Carol) Herm; grandchildren: Matt (Katie) Herm, Brad (Gabrielle) Herm and Amy (Garrett) Schmidt; great grandchildren: Owen and Elliott Herm, Tristan and Coralynne Schmidt; step-children: Terri (Jim) Weiss, Susan (John) McDonnell, Mary Jane (Jose) Marull, David (Ann) Cardon, Jim Cardon and John Cardon; one brother, Don (Ann) Herm; and a sister, Marge Vincent; and many extended family and friends. George was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon; daughter, Valerie Hackel; and his brother, Tom Herm. George was a gifted mathematician and while at the University of Michigan took a lengthy math problem home to work on over the week-end. He took his findings to his professor stating that he had reached a different result than the author of this math problem. With the advice of his professor he sent his findings and results to the author. The author changed the text book. This is the genius and love he had for math all of his life. The family would like to thank the nurses and CNA's at HealthSource for their loving care of George, especially during the last days of his life. Often on College football Saturdays the CNA's would get the Michigan games on TV and join George in his room for a bit of the games. (So that's where they were!) FUNERAL: A funeral liturgy will be held for George at 12:00 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2019 at St. Dominic Parish - SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 4735 W. Michigan Ave., Saginaw, Michigan. Rev.
