Obituary of Mary Agnes Sonntag

SONNTAG, Mary Agnes passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at St. Mary's of Michigan. Age 93 years. She was surrounded by her family and passed away peacefully. Mary Agnes Gavit was born on January 16, 1919 to Jennings and Grace (Guest) Gavit in Saginaw. She married Arnold F. Sonntag on June 29, 1946 at St. Mary Cathedral. Arnold predeceased her on August 21, 1973.
Mary was a charter member of St. Stephen Church and its Alter Society. She was also a member of the League of Catholic Women, The Catholic Study Club, and a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital for over 40 years. She loved to play cards, garden, and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid spectator at their many sporting and school events over the years and was very proud of all of them.
Mary is survived by her three sons and their spouses: James (Kathleen) Sonntag of Saginaw, Robert (Susan) Sonntag of Saginaw, David (Mary Kay) Sonntag of Royal Oak; ten grandchildren: Kelly and Blake Sobol of Midland, Kevin and Kristy Sonntag of Jenison, Jeffrey Sonntag of Mt. Clements, Lisa Sonntag of Royal Oak, Bradley Sonntag of Saginaw, Meaghan Sonntag of New York, NY, Andrew Sonntag of Madison Heights, Kaleigh Sonntag of Royal Oak; five great-grandchildren: Tanner and Beckett Sobol of Midland, Jackson and Ella Sonntag of Jenison, and Jacob Sonntag of Madison Heights; three brothers: Al (Madeline) Gavit of El Paso, TX, Fr. James Gavit and Jennings "Gus" Gavit, both of Saginaw; and one brother-in-law: Howard Hamman.
Besides her parents, Mary was also predeceased by her two sisters: Anna Mae Hamman, Rita Grohman; one brother-in-law: Don Grohman; and one sister-in-law: Delores Gavit.
FUNERAL: Mary's Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1310 Malzahn. Mary's brother, Fr. James Gavit, and her nephew, Fr. Steven Gavit, will co-officiate. Rite of Committal will be at St. Andrew Cemetery.
VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State), on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A vigil service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Stephen Catholic Church or St. Francis Home.
