Obituary of Jean Margaret Shurlow

Passed away September 24, 2019 at the age of 92 years. Jean was born January 28, 1927 in Detroit, MI the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Duranceau) LaHaie. She was united in marriage to Floyd Steffen on June 21, 1947. Jean's life was devoted to being a wife, homemaker and raising their 8 sons. Jean enjoyed camping with the family, bowling and traveling to FL. Floyd preceded her in death on July 14, 1993. Years later, Jean reunited with an old high school sweetheart; Arden Shurlow. They were united in marriage on June 24, 2006. The two of them loved to go dancing and sailing every summer around the Great Lakes of Michigan. Together they traveled the world, covering the U.S. and 6 of the 7 continents; including climbing to the top of Machu Picchu. Their travels came to an end with Arden's death on February 28, 2017. Jean is survived by her 7 sons and their spouses, Paul (Vicki), Jim (Trudy), Rick (Donna), Michael (Maria), Mark (Patti), Joe (Sue) and Andrew (Linda) Steffen; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters, Ivan (Alice) LaHaie, Sherry (Don) Gilbert, Rose (Aubrey) Smith and Chuck LaHaie and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands, Floyd and Arden, Jean was preceded in death by a son, John Steffen and two brothers, Robert and Richard LaHaie. FUNERAL: The Funeral Liturgy will take place Tuesday. October 1, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 5376 State St. with Rev. Fr. Steve Gavit to officiate. Committal service to follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. VISITATION: Family and friends will gather at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Monday, September 30, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Vigil service for Jean will also take place Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. Family will also be available Tuesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning a memorial contribution are asked to consider memorial to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.
