Obituary of Thomas Chambers Fry

FRY, Thomas "Tom" Chambers of Saginaw, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at his home. He was 76 years old. Thomas C. Fry was born August 13, 1934 in Saginaw to the late John and Grace (Chambers) Fry. He was married to Helen J. Hughes on August 3, 1963 in Cresskill, N.J. She survives him. Tom graduated from Saginaw High School in 1952 and from Central Michigan University in 1957. He was a guidance counselor for the Saginaw Township Community Schools for over 40 years until his retirement in 1999. During his career he assisted students at Hemmeter School, MacArthur High School and Heritage High School. Tom met his wife while they were both teaching at Chippewa Middle School and together they developed Gym Jester Gymnastics. The school program grew, eventually moving to a private facility where Tom served as the first competitive team coach. He was recognized as one of Michigan's top coaches. Tom was very generous and enjoyed helping family and friends. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Tom was a passionate fan of all sports. He spent many happy days at Torch Lake and was an avid boater his whole life. Tom treasured his time with family, and they have many wonderful memories of boating and water-skiing together. Surviving is his wife, Helen; two sons: John Fry, Scott (Christine) Fry: two grandchildren: Chloe and Gabriel Fry; one brother: Richard (Barbara) Fry: one sister: Joan McGlaughlin; plus many nephews and nieces, including Beverly and Mary Westervelt. Tom was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, James McGlaughlin. MEMORIAL SERVICE: According to Tom's wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at First Congregational Church UCC, 403 S. Jefferson. Dr. Todd Farley will officiate. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the church on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to First Congregational Church UCC Organ Fund or Gym Jester Gymnastics Scholarship Fund.
