Mary, Virginia, & Alex,
We are so sad for you all. Our oldest son went to Hemmeter with Alex, and our youngest son went to school with Virginia. Jim was such a talented man who left his mark (literally) on Saginaw. I always enjoyed talking with Jim, who would answer questions
about his work. Saginaw is a more beautiful place because of him.

I am so sorry for your loss. I never really got to meet Mr. Five, but he seemed like a really nice man. I often saw him outside while I was on my way home from work or school, and he always waved. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

Mary, I am so sad to hear of Jim's passing. I met him in 1983 when he hand-painted the front door of the Housing Commission office at the Davenport Hi-Rise. Our paths crossed numerous times over the years - some of which you were also present. He was a most talented and gracious man. You were both very lucky to have found each other!

I had the pleasure of getting know Jim just a bit as he came nearly every year for 17 years of the Delta College Career Pathways Open House for high school students. I think Jim felt that one of his callings was to show young people that art in the actual hands of a master is still valuable. He was right, and I know he made a difference for hundreds or thousands of kids over all those years. And, his painting of Jimi Hendrix in downtown Midland has moved me every single time I've seen it. Rest artfully, friend.

Mary, Alex and Virginia, I am so very sorry to see this this morning. Jim was always such a neat guy to talk to--always had an interesting and unique take on matters, and a congenial and kind manner about him. He leaves a big space in the community, and of course, in your lives. Our sincere condolences and sympathy.
