Hansen, Elizabeth M. "Betty" Saginaw, Michigan Passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Covenant Health Care - Cooper, surrounded by her family. She was 94 years old. Elizabeth Marie Morningstar was born on December 31, 1923 in East Lansing, MI to the late Ralph R. and Lillian (Lyman) Morningstar. She married Herbert J. Hansen, Sr. on March 29, 1941. He preceded her in death on August 8, 1976. Betty was a freelance writer for the Saginaw News from 1960-1969. She then worked full time for the Saginaw News from 1969 until 1980 as a columnist and news reporter, retiring in 1980. After retirement she moved to Sacramento, CA and worked as a writer and editor for Raley's Supermarket Corporation, producing a high quality magazine for 10 years. In 1993 she returned to Saginaw and was member of the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, Mothers for Peace, Call To Action, served on the Board for Saginaw County Mental Health and volunteered within the Saginaw Community. Betty enjoyed politics, being involved with the Democratic Party, campaigning, and voting in every election beginning in 1945. She had a lifelong passion for learning through reading and had many life giving experiences forming the foundation for becoming a much loved and excellent writer. Her writing included two books, "The Best of Betty Hansen", produced by the Saginaw News and "Walking Backwards", Editor Holly Tiret. Betty is survived by her children: Herbert J. Jr. (Gloria) Hansen, Ralph W. (Diane) Hansen, Stephen A. (Janie) Hansen, John C. (Anne Marie) Hansen, Patricia A. (James) Jaime, Holly B. (Scott) Tiret and Joseph G. (Kelly L.) Hansen; son-in-law, Roger J. Schultz; 35 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herbert; son, Edward Allen Hansen; Barbara S. Schultz; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Hansen; great-granddaughter, Monica Dailey; three brothers and one sister. Betty's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Staff of HealthSource and Covenant Health Care for the excellent care that was provided. FUNERAL: A funeral liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption. 615 Hoyt Ave., Saginaw. Fr. Don McEachin, CSSp will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. VISITATION: Betty's family will receive visitors at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Betty will lie in state at the Cathedral on Friday at 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. MEMORIALS: Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a donation to the Mustard Seed, Saginaw City Rescue Mission or S.V.R.C (Saginaw Valley Rehabilitation Center).
