Obituary of Norman J. Harris

Harris, Norman J. of Saginaw, Michigan Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed peacefully with his wife by his side, on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center. He was 88 years old. Norman James Harris was born on June 18, 1929 in Pontiac, Michigan to the late Leo B. and Flossie E. (Alward) Harris. He was a proud 1947 graduate of Saginaw High School. Norm proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army from 1951-1953. He married the love of his life, Dorothy E. Curren on December 30, 1956; she survives him. Norm was employed for over 30 years at Merritt Packing. He also worked for many years in shipping and receiving at Saginaw Machine. Norm was a faithful and lifetime member of First Baptist Church (Beacon of Hope) where he served as an usher, as well as participated on various boards and committees. He and Dorothy were active volunteers at the Eleanor Frank Senior Center. Norm was an avid sportsman, he loved playing, participating and watching all sports. Above all he loved and cherished his family. He will forever be remembered for his indomitable spirit, fierce competitive nature and for his wonderful sense of humor. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Dorothy Harris of Saginaw; two sons and one daughter: Tim (Susie) Harris of Roanoke, Virginia, Michael (Twyla) Harris of Albany, TX, and Evelyn (James) Grinnell of Lansing; 11 grandchildren: Daniel Harris, Ben Harris, Amy Harris, Mackenzie Harris, Katie Harris, Dylan (Marissa) Harris, Samantha Harris, Amber Grinnell, AJ Grinnell, Austin Grinnell and Jason Grinnell and his fiancée, Kali Munn; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Leatrice Place of Whittemore; and one sister-in-law, Shirley (Wilbur) Monroe of Brant Lake, NY. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL: A Funeral Service will take place 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State). Pastor Rick Cunningham will officiate. Burial and Military Honors will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens under the auspices of the United States Army and VFW Post #1859. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Beacon of Hope Church.
