Obituary of Shirley J. Patzwaldt

Our loving wife, mother, and grandmother, made her transition on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Covenant HealthCare - Harrison, with her son by her side. She was 90 years old. Shirley Jean Prueter was born on December 3, 1925 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late John L. and Julia (Mertz) Prueter. She married William D. Patzwaldt on December 27, 1945; he preceded her in death on February 16, 1998. Shirley graduated from Saginaw High School and Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University and a Master of Arts degree in Nursing Education from the University of Michigan. She was actively involved in nursing education throughout her life, teaching at Saginaw General Hospital and Saginaw and Bay City Practical Nurse Schools. Shirley developed and taught Expectant Parent Classes at Saginaw General and St. Luke's Hospitals, and taught at Bay Arenac Skill Center, where she was involved in developing the Practical Nurse Programs. She concluded her teaching career at Great Lakes Junior College, which is now known as Davenport University. Shirley was a member of First Congressional Church, PEO Chapters EQ, and Germans from Russia Society. Left to cherish her memory are two sons: Jeffrey D. (Karen) Patzwaldt of Freeland and Daniel W. (Susan) Patzwaldt of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren: Jason Patzwaldt, Nathan (Melissa Tucker) Patzwaldt, Rachel (Tom) Nowak, Melissa (Taylor) Barr, and Sean Patzwaldt; four great-grandchildren: Lincoln and Kara Nowak, Harrison Grace Patzwaldt, and Olivia Jean Barr; special companion, Tyler Haynes; brother-in-law, John (Sally) Tinney; and two sisters-in-law, Beverly Tinney and Lois Prueter-Bredesen, of Minneapolis, MN. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 53 years, Bill; and brother, John L. Prueter. FUNERAL: A funeral service will be held at 12:00noon on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State). Pastor Rob Schmidt will officiate. Private entombment will follow at Oakwood Mausoleum. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
