Obituary of Richard Hausbeck

Hausbeck, Richard "Dick" of Dewitt, Michigan formerly of Saginaw Richard ('Dick') Hausbeck, former co-owner and Vice President of the Hausbeck Pickle Company along with his brothers John, Gerald and Pat, has gone to heaven at the age of 84. Richard was born December 30th, 1930, the sixth of seven children to Charles and Rose Hausbeck. Charles died at a young age leaving Rose to look after his new pickle plant and raise the children. She did both successfully. Richard was an extremely loyal and dutiful son and worked hard in the family business. When he married Kay Hanlon in 1955 he became her partner for life and raised his own family with the same steadfastness. He and Kay had five daughters, Jane, Mary, Sheila, Kathleen and Molly. When Jane became sick with cancer at age seven he took her anywhere that there might be a better treatment or cure. When Jane died in 1976, Kay was diagnosed with MS. He then took his beloved wife anywhere there might be a better treatment or a new medicine. He stood by her side and together they weathered life's storms. During all of this time, Richard worked long days at the pickle factory with his brothers. In later years he ran the tank-yard and could be found outside even on the coldest days dipping pickles with employees whose friendship and respect he had earned with his wit and work ethic. After his retirement, he began dreaming of the new house he would finally build for Kay. In 2006, Richard moved her into a beautiful, custom-built house in DeWitt where they would be closer to their children and grandchildren. To his daughters, Richard will be remembered as the man who could hit a baseball from their house to the street corner. He bought them a backyard pool even though bills for Jane's medical care continued for years after her death. He loved to spray his girls with the hose and could be counted on to buy donuts on Saturday mornings from Hamilton Bakery. He was proud and careful of every car he ever owned. The '65 Chevy Bel-Air that Jane, Mary and Sheila all drove in high school is still in the family. He was a master at barbequing chicken and it was a staple at summer picnics. He loved the holidays. Every year there was a real Christmas tree that he had chosen and cut himself always. It was carefully decorated and had many presents beneath. He dressed as Santa for his girls when they were young and behaved as Santa all of his life, generously bestowing gifts on them whenever he had the opportunity. He packed them all off to college when it was time and visited them laden with treats. He was extremely proud of his girls and their accomplishments and bragged to whoever would listen. He became an ardent Penn State fan after Mary earned her PhD there and wore the garb to prove it. His grandchildren found him to be full of mischief and fun with pop in the icebox and Toaster Strudel in the freezer. They looked forward to the chips and dip that he would always bring to family celebrations. Richard had many long-time friends in Saginaw and enjoyed everyone he met. From the grocery store to the barber he had his 'rounds' that he would conduct on Saturday mornings and looked forward to the conversations that were sure to ensue. He would tell stories of running into "kids" from the school bus he drove to Holy Family School who recognized and remembered him from 30 years ago. His daughters added three men to the family, Andy Miller (Kathleen), Jeffery Collins (Sheila) and Greg Lyman (Mary). Greg had a special place in Richard's heart as his partner in crime when he wanted to go out to lunch, shopping, or just outside to enjoy the weather. Richard also enjoyed the antics of seven grandchildren, Anna, Adam, Scott, Abigail, Ben, Alaina and Isabella. He is survived by his brother, John, and his sister-in-law, Bernadene. Mary, Sheila, Kathleen and Molly know that their mother, Kay, reached for his hand from heaven as she so often did on earth. They take comfort in knowing that both of their parents will watch over them until they are all together again. FUNERAL: A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1525 S. Washington Ave. Rev. Fr. Ronald J. Dombrowski will officiate with Deacon Roger Pasionek assisting. Rite of Committal will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Dick will lie in state at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. MEMORIALS: Richard enjoyed ice skating and sledding with his "chums" at Hoyt Park while growing up and shared these activities with his daughters.
