ROTH, Alton Albert "Tony" of Saginaw and Harrison, Michigan passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Meadowview Manor. He was 92 years old. Tony was born on September 5, 1921 in Frankenmuth, Michigan to the late Albert J. Roth and Alma Engel. He attended Saginaw High School. Tony then attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. In 1941 he went to New Jersey and worked for Western Electric and then moved to Buffalo. The Pearl Harbor attack led Tony to enlist in the Navy Reserve (V7 Program). He continued his engineering education until called by the Navy in 1943 for training in Midshipmen Officers Training School. Tony attended Diesel Engineering School in Pennsylvania. He then picked up his ship (USSLCS-83) in Portland, Oregon. In San Diego the ship was outfitted for wartime duty on January 12, 1944. Tony's ship stopped at Pearl Harbor for fuel, then to the Mariana Islands to prepare for invasion of Okinawa. Three months were spent in Okinawa fighting suicide planes. In 1945 Tony went to the Philippines to prepare for occupation of Japan. He landed in Japan in September of 1945. Tony had occupation duty until December of 1945. He married Teresa Mullin of Laurium, Michigan on December 21, 1946; she preceded him in death on October 17, 1992. Tony worked two years in Wisconsin as an engineer and returned to Michigan Technological University in 1948. In 1950 he and Teresa came to Saginaw to make their home. Tony worked for General Motors as an engineer; retiring in 1979 after 22 years of service. He was an avid woodsman and loved the outdoors. He was constantly busy with his tree, lumbering and doing woodworking projects. Tony married Geraldine Roth in 1996 and they made their home in both Saginaw and Harrison, Michigan; she survives him. Surviving besides his wife of 18 years, Geraldine Roth of Saginaw; one son, Gregory (Renee) Roth of Davison; two grandchildren: Melissa (Joshua) Bishop of Davison; Eric Roth of Colorado; and a great granddaughter, Cecilia Bishop. FUNERAL: A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2014 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 2565 N. Miller Road. Pastor Edward Meyer will officiate. Military Honors will follow under the auspices of V.F.W. Post #1859. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet, Michigan. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tony will lie in state at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Service.
