OLVERA, Concepcion S. "Sam" of Saginaw Township passed away Monday, June 2, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Sam was 83 years old. Concepcion S. Olvera was born on December 8, 1930 in Austin, Texas to the late Antonio and Ester (Sanchez) Olvera. He married Carmen Sepulveda on June 21, 1951. She survives him. As a young man he worked for Wright Construction and later started his own company and operated Michigan Concrete Structures and Surfaces for over 30 years. While operating his business, Sam became licensed as a real estate agent in the Saginaw area. In his retirement years he enjoyed operating Pre-cast Polished Concrete. Sam was a member of the Saginaw Builders Association, Hispanic Business Association of Saginaw, Saginaw Landlord Association, LULAC, MAC Council Center, and a founding member of the Tri-City SER. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. With his involvement with the American GI Forum of Saginaw, he helped to organize the Memorial Day observance for Hispanic Veterans. Sam loved to promote higher education and was one of the founders of the former Benito Juarez Academy and established the Los Principios Program in Saginaw. He enjoyed rewarding his grandchildren for excelling in school. Sam loved taking many trips to Mexico to visit with relatives. Sam is survived by his wife, Carmen; children: Isabel Olvera, Christina (Ramon) Gutierrez, Anna (Warren) Booms, Patricia Dzurka, Aida E. (David) Olvera-Dyckes and Steven (Lori) Olvera; grandchildren: Marisa D. Sinclair, Sabrina Gutierrez, Natalia Gutierrez-Dowd, Diana N. Derige, Raquel Barrientos, Cassandra Booms, Heather Olvera, Jennifer Dzurka, Andrew J. Dyckes and Julia Olvera; four great grandchildren; brothers: Antonio, Lazaro and Jose Olvera; sister, Theresa Castillo and Maria Murillo; he is also survived by many extended family and friends. Sam was preceded in death by his sons: Jesus and Luis Olvera; son-in-law, Jeff Dzurka; brothers: Max, Paul, Herman, Snow, and Edward Olvera. FUNERAL: Funeral Liturgy will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 5376 State St. Rev. Fr. Joseph A. Schabel will officiate. Rite of Committal will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 and Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sam will lie in state at the church on Friday from 12:00 p.m. noon until the time of the funeral liturgy. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Heartland Hospice, Child Abuse and Neglect Council of Saginaw County or the City Rescue Mission of Saginaw.
