I had the pleasure of meeting Mr & Mrs Lockwood at Edgewood when I visited my aunt who lived there also. I met one of their daughters and her children when they visited and one child had the family dog outside the window. Such a blessed family. C.J. came to my Dad's (Bob Biggers) viewing which I greatly appreciated. So very sorry for your loss. Cherish all the great family memories that will bring joy to your hearts.

Carl was a warm and loving man dedicated to his Lord. He had a passion for Christian Outreach. My fondest memory of Carl was seeing the loving smile of a grandfather when Chris and Sara's children would enter the church each Sunday after their Faith Formation classes. We have missed seeing him each Sunday.

I have enough fond memories of my time spent with CJ to fill a book. I realized while thinking about CJ last night that when I picture him in my mind he's always wearing his green Army cargo pants or his solid hunter's orange deer hunting suit. In other words, CJ was always on vacation when I was around him! I remember when I was just old enough to join the hunting crew thoroughly enjoying watching him carefully sort out his duck hunting shells from his well-worn green ammo box, or preparing his stinky old chemical handwarmers the night before opening day of deer season. Little things like that. I remember his Winchester rifle and how he couldn't have cared less about the latest and greatest in hunting gear- he was just happy to be around everyone.
He used to give me a hard time if I didn't "feather the butter lightly to the edges" of his toast in the morning, something it took me years to realize was a joke- because until then I concentrated on getting that toast buttered correctly like my life depended on it.
I remember a time I fell out of our canoe when duck hunting on Fletchers Floodwater. One of my cousins did too- idiot kids not paying attention. We were both near hypothermic I'm certain but the vote seemed to be that the ducks were still flying and so we'd stay out on the water. CJ took one look at us, shivering so hard we were unable to talk, and simply said, "I think we better call it a day." And so we did.
Once I accidentally shot two doe (long story there) and had to use John's doe tag along with mine to keep things legal. My dad was hunting in distant hills which meant I had two deer to field dress, having never done it by myself. CJ calmly surveyed the situation as if ordering his breakfast and talked me through cleaning both deer to perfection. Some of his statements throughout that ordeal were so perfectly funny I still quote them to this day.
On his last trip to Canada he stayed up late one night and told me about his post-WWII aviation career in the reserves including some incredible stories about flying piston engine transport planes in all manner of tense situations. I'm sure he kept his calm. In fact, I'm positive he did.
We still say things like "I'll be sitting in CJ's spot" when identifying where we're hunting, still retell stories about the things he and my grandpa did in Canada and all over Montmorency County, and still feel his absence every time we get off that float plane and realize CJ isn't there making sure his little cooler with his diabetes medicine is being handled with care.
CJ was the definitive ethical gentleman Michigan outdoorsman and a man I deeply admired. While my own adventures outdoors continue, they simply aren't the same without CJ. I'll remember him and be sharing stories of my time with him the rest of my life.
