Loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away on Thursday evening, January 30, 2025 at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw, he was 92 years old. James Mervin LaDrig was born on October 25, 1932 in Saginaw, Michigan to Mervin and Lorrain (Smith) LaDrig. He served his country in the United Sates Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Japan. He met Barbara L. Compeau while dancing at Gable Gardens and married her on August 3, 1957 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Saginaw. They celebrated 59 years together before Barbara’s death on May 21, 2017. James was employed by CSX railroad, working as a Yardmaster until his retirement in 1997 after over 40 years of service. He was a member of VFW Post 1859 and the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
He loved playing golf and horseshoes. James also enjoyed playing cards. But above all, he really loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and was always there to support them at their sporting events.
Surviving are his children, James (Irene) LaDrig, John (Brenda) LaDrig, Bill (Katie) LaDrig, Jamie Carle, Barbie LaDrig, Robert (Angie) LaDrig, and Joseph LaDrig; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas LaDrig, and many nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Mervin and Lorrain LaDrig; siblings, Joanne Slabaugh, Mike LaDrig, Mary LaDrig, and Paul LaDrig.
FUNERAL SERVICE: A Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 2025 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1525 S. Washington Ave., Saginaw, MI 48601. Rev. Fr. Christopher Coman will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Army and VFW Post 1859 immediately following the service.
VISITATION: Family and friends will gather at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1525 S. Washington Ave. on Thursday, February 6, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
MEMORIALS: Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Arbor Day Foundation.
